  • Tentang Kami: Bina Karta Lestari (BINTARI) Foundation is a non-governmental organization which moves in the field of environmental protection to support sustainable development efforts. BINTARI acts independently, non-profitable and non-political activities oriented.BINTARI was established and officially commenced its activity on 15 February 1986 by some experts, academics, and environmental observer who concern with the environmental and sustainable development problems especially in urban areas.BINTARI has a vision that every environmentally developing activity will be successful if community participation can run optimally. Therefore, the community should be empowered to have an effective chance to participate in the process of environmental management and development.To bring such vision into reality, BINTARI attempts to transform ideas from scientist, environmental observer, and academics in the form of real activities together with the community.VISION, MISSION & VALUE OF THE ORGANIZATIONVision of BINTARI : Non-profitable, non-political and independent organization which commit to create a sustainable and equitable urban environmental management supported by community’s participation.Mission of BINTARI : To empower the community in managing the environmental by improving knowledge and awareness, and promoting the efforts of environmental conservation.Value and Principal of BINTARI : BINTARI believes in some important valuesa respected. Those values are implemented through its programs and activities. Values contained in BINTARI’s program and activity consist of: Sustainable, Equitable, Participative, Independent and Advocacy. In implementing its programs and activities, BINTARI will consistently hold the following principles: Transparent, Professional, Public Accountability, and Innovation.OBJECTIVE OF THE ORGANIZATIONEnvironmental management consists of various development aspect which basically influenced by the interaction between human with natural resource and environment aimed at the exploitation of limited natural resource to fulfill the needs. In making use of such limited natural resource, harmony and human (community) quality balance with their environment must remain kept.Thus, a sustainable development will be successful if the community participation can run optimally. In spite of pragmatic, the community participation is not an easy thing to be done. However, in the process of development their participation has been admitted as an effective approach due to:•Pragmatically, community participation is a means of obtaining opinion of the local needs and condition;•Logically, the community will be loyal towards the development if they are involved;•Philosophically, community participation is a basic form of democracy rights which is people’s right to determine their own development (development for people).Community organization is one of strategic approaches to raise, motivate and manage the community participation. Therefore, BINTARI support the establishment of organized community so that it can make their participation effective in the process of environmental management and development.In its programs, BINTARI always attempts to transform ideas (concept, method, and technique) of environmental protection and sustainable development through many activities such as: social control, community assistance, research, consultation and information service, training, and other real activities.PROGRAMSIn implementing its activities, BINTARI divide its activities into five programs, namely Liquid Waste Management and Clean Production Program, Solid Waste Management Program, Environmental Education Program, Land Conservation Program, and Ecotourism and Internship Program. Those programs are run through activities like education and training, research and development, and community development.1. Liquid Waste Management and Clean Production ProgramSome activities included in this program that had been implemented and followed by BINTARI are:•Organizing Basic Analysis Course of Environmental Impact (AMDAL A) in cooperation with Environmental Ministry, Control Board of Environmental Impact (BAPEDAL), Environmental Education Centre of Diponegoro University, and Environmental Education Centre of Gadjah Mada University Yogyakarta (1986-1996)•Other short time implementation course like the handling and managing of liquid waste from industry.•Publishing books of waste water management, such as “Tofu Waste Water Management (1991)”, The Industry Investigation in Controlling the Pollution (2000)”. There were also some activity reports which were not published.•Organizing research and development program of small scale waste water management, like what had been done in small scale industry in some cities in Central Java, textile industry in Solo, etc.•Experiment and development of simple environmental technology for the using of biogas.•Research and development of clean production for small scale industry.•Pilot project of Bajak river management in Semarang city (waste water management as the main program), in cooperation with KITA ECC and Semarang City Government under JICA Partnership Program (2002-2004).2. Environmental Education ProgramSome activities included in this program that had been implemented and followed by BINTARI are:•Information service and environmental campaign for community through some media. Some of them are: VCD Movie Series of Environmental Education (1st series: Garbage Aware, 2nd series: Water Resource)”, Video Collection of Environmental Education Activities (Volume 1 and 2)”, Golek Puppet as a media for Environmental Education, and some leaflet for environmental campaign.•Environmental Education Training for Elementary School Teachers in Jomblang Village Semarang (2003) in cooperation with KITA-ECC, JICA, and Semarang City Government•Environmental Education Training for Elementary School Teachers in Babon river basin, which consists of Semarang Regency, Demak Regency and Semarang City (2004), and the implementation of its assistance activity in cooperation with ProLH-GTZ.•Motivating the environmental education subject into the curriculum of Elementary School in Central Java, instead of put environmental education material into other subjects.•Publishing environmental education books. There are three books that have been arranged for students and teachers of Elementary School like: “Let’s Love te Environment” (2003), “Guidance Book of Environmental Education for Teachers” (2004), and “Collection Book of Environmental Education Activities” (2004).•Assisting program of environmental education for women association in Jomblang Village (2002-now).3. Ecotourism and Internship ProgramSome activities included in this program that had been implemented and followed by BINTARI are:•Internship program for students/volunteers from local and foreign countries (2000 until now) to join BINTARI’s activities. Some participants come from: Kitakyushu University, Tokyo University, Waseda University, Free University of Amsterdam, Ludwig Maximilians University, Kumamoto University, Keio University, Diponegoro University, National Technology Institute Malang, etc. This program is run in cooperation with AIESEC Diponegoro University, SFC AIESEC Keio Japan, and some organizations.•Ecotourism program which mix tourism activities with ecological objects (river, forest, rural, urban, final disposal site of garbage, WWTF of industry, etc), cultural object, and homestay (doing activity with local community). Some groups of students from Japan had joined this program in Semarang, Yogyakarta, and Karimunjawa (2001-now). Until now, BINTARI had organized Ecotourism for 15 groups.4. Garbage Management ProgramSome activities in this program are:•Research and development of composting from urban organically domestic solid waste.•Women association and youth group in managing the domestic solid waste (2002-now)•Initiation and Arrangement of Environmental Management (including solid waste management) together with the community surrounding Babon river basin, in cooperation with ProLH-GTZ (2002).5. Land Conservation ProgramSome activities in this program are:•Community assistance in mangrove plantation program in Demak Regency (1998-2001); Conservation of mangrove forest in Tapak river Semarang (1996-1997); Community assistance in planting and managing mangrove forest in North Coast areas of Central Java (1999-2001).•Community assistance in conservating the critical condition land (1998).•Cleaning-up the Ungaran Mountain with Natural Lover of High School and University in Semarang City (2000)•Research of coastal area: Technical planning of Demak coastal conservation 2001);•Development study of Kreo Cave (2001): Development study of Semarang city open space (2000); in cooperation with Semarang City Planning Board•Farmers group assistance in the Program of National Movement for Land and Forest Rehabilitation (GNRHL) in Semarang City (2004-2005).•Development of trees bank mangrove (mangrove seedling in Semarang City).NEXT AGENDAIn the next of 2005 and the following years, BINTARI plans some agenda through cooperation with community, government, private sectors both in and out of Indonesia. They are:•Facilitating the management of Babon river basin. The activities are facilitating the management of domestic liquid waste, the management of domestic waste, and conducting Environmental Education (the following program of model area) cooperating with ProLH GTZ.•Developing Environmental Education program in Central Java through spreading syllabus.•Developing conservation and greening program the costal area by seeding and planting mangrove in the north costal of Semarang city. Managing domestic waste in Semarang city, sharing to the community how to create organic fertilizer and organic farming in Jomblang Village, Semarang.•Stepping the community participation in conserving environment in urban area by greening, managing waste, and managing sanitation program.•Widen some cooperation with local, national, and international NGO’s•Holding some training, workshop, and course in environment management of small industry of tofu.•Conducting a campaign of environment awareness especially for young people and generally for urban community.•Conducting and developing ecotourism as an effort in conserving the conserved and historic area. There are packets offered for both domestic and foreign tourists and students.•Publishing some done researches and a handbook for Environmental Education and Environmental Management.•Developing simple echo friendly technology (biogas, compost for household, liquid waste management, etc.)NET WORKINGIn running its programs, BINTARI net some cooperation with local and center government, profession organizations, universities (state/private), industries, local and international NGO’s.Some cooperation written in Memorandum of Understanding / MoU run by BINTARI are:§City government of Semarang, dated on 26th of February 1999 and renewed on 15th of May 2004, concerning about Semarang City Development and Non Governmental Organization Developing.§Kitakyushu International Techno-Cooperative Association Environmental Cooperation Center (KITA-EEC) Japan, dated on 24th of November 1998, concerning about the Development of Urban Area which is sustainable and has Environmental Management.§International Cooperation Institutions: JICA Japan, GTZ German, EMDI Canada, UNDP, IGES, AYEF, and more.§National institutions: KEHATI, PUSTEKLIM, JPL, KAIL Bandung, USC Satunama, Bali Fokus, LPTP, and more.§Environmental Ministry, Environmental Research Center (PPLH) Gadjah Mada University – Yogyakarta, and Environmental Research Center (PPLH) Diponegoro University – Semarang in holding based course of environmental impact analysis (AMDAL – A).
